Black Ginger and Body Fat: A 2025 Study Sparks Interest

A human trial. A measurable change in body fat. What did researchers find after 12 weeks?

A result worth a closer look

Mean change in body-fat mass
Study groupChange
SIRTMAX−0.34 kg
Placebo+0.30 kg

Fat mass fell in the SIRTMAX group while it rose with placebo. The between-group difference was statistically significant.

That contrast is what makes the paper interesting. One group moved down, the other up. What lies behind the difference—and what might a longer investigation reveal?

Behind the finding: a human trial

Published in Frontiers in Nutrition, the South Korean trial randomized 100 adults; 83 were analyzed. It compared SIRTMAX with placebo, double-blind, for 12 weeks. The daily preparation supplied 50 mg of black ginger ethanol extract.

The most interesting next chapter is what researchers do with this lead. Can a promising observation become the starting point for a clearer understanding of this plant?

A few details for the full picture

Body-fat percentage did not differ significantly between groups. Lean mass decreased in both groups, without a significant between-group difference. Diet and activity were not strictly controlled, and follow-up was short.
